Choosing the Right Excavator for Your Project

When it comes to construction, landscaping, or utility work, choosing the right excavator can make or break the efficiency and success of your project. These versatile machines are ideal for tight spaces and precision digging—but with so many options and models available, how do you choose the one that fits your needs best?

Determine the Scope of Your Project

  • Are you digging trenches, grading, or demoing concrete?
  • Will you be working in tight residential areas or larger commercial job sites?
  • How deep do you need to dig?
  • Do you need to use hydraulic attachments like a breaker or auger?

Consider Size and Operating Weight

Kubota’s excavator lineup ranges from 1 to 8 tons. The industry standard classes are in metric tons and this can sometimes be confusing for customers. The size and weight of the machine influence how easily it can be transported, how much it can lift, and how well it fits into confined areas.

  • 1–2 tons (2,200 - 4,400 pounds): Ideal for extremely tight-access areas (Kubota models: K008-5, KX018-4, U10-5, U17-5, U27-4)
  • 3–5 tons (6,600 - 11,000 pounds): Good balance of power and size for residential or smaller footprint jobs (Kubota models: KX030-4, KX033-4, KX040-5, KX057-5, U27-4, U35-4, U48-5, U55-5)
  • 6–8 tons (13,200 - 17,600 pounds): Best for larger projects requiring more reach and lifting capacity (Kubota models: KX080-5)

For crowded workspaces and easy transportation, the Kubota U10-5 is a standout. This 1-ton minimal tail swing excavator offers a 10’ digging height and 5’ 11” digging depth inside an ultra-compact frame.

Choose the Right Tail Swing Configuration

There are three common configurations, Kubota designates this difference with either a K, KX or a U:

  • Conventional tail swing: Known for impressive lifting capacity and stability (Kubota models: All K/KX)
  • Tight or reduced tail swing: A nice compromise between size and power (Kubota models: U10-5, U27-4, U35-4, U48-5, U55-5)
  • Zero tail swing: Best for working close to walls or obstacles (Kubota models: U17-5)

The Kubota U17-5 offers zero-tail swing—perfect for working along buildings and fences, or in smaller spaces where you can’t afford to bump into structures. Plus, retractable tracks allow for narrow entry access.

Hydraulic System and Attachments Compatibility

If your job requires more than digging—like trenching, compacting, or demolishing—you’ll need auxiliary hydraulic capabilities to support attachments.

The Kubota KX040-5 has a robust hydraulic system that utilizes the engine horsepower to its fullest extent allowing flow rate to be increased for optimal performance while using a hydraulic attachment and operating other functions simultaneously.

Combine a Kubota excavator with Kubota by Land Pride performance-matched attachments to take your productivity and performance to the next level. Built for durability and precision, these attachments help you adapt to various tasks and conditions to elevate your job site performance.

Comfort and Technology Features

A comfortable operator is a productive operator. Look for machines with features that boost ease of use and help reduce fatigue.

Consider:

  • Climate controlled cabs
  • Ergonomic and adjustable seats and arm rests
  • Operator station visibility and access
  • Intuitive joystick controls
  • Digital displays for diagnostics

The Kubota U48-5 offers options like a deluxe cab, climate control, and an advanced LCD panel with optional keyless start and diagnostic feedback—making long days on the jobsite far more manageable.

Budget and Total Cost of Ownership

Don’t just think about purchase price—factoring in fuel efficiency, maintenance costs, resale value, and financing options into your decision can help ensure you get the most out of your purchase.

Kubota is known for durability. And with a 24 month/2,000-hour basic limited warranty on all excavators, plus a strong dealer network for parts and service support, we’re here to help make sure your projects are completed efficiently and effectively.

Choosing the right excavator is all about matching the machine to your specific project needs. Kubota offers a well-rounded lineup for a variety of applications, from backyard digging and landscaping to commercial construction. Visit your local Kubota dealership today to talk to the experts.

Hay Season Equipment Prep Checklist

A successful hay season starts with well-maintained equipment. Before you hit the fields, take time to inspect, clean, and service your tractors and hay tools to help prevent costly downtime.

Consult your operator's manual for proper maintenance and operating procedures or contact your local Kubota dealer to schedule your pre-season maintenance service.

Tractors - Your tractor is the backbone of your hay operation, so ensure it's in top condition:

  • Fluids & Filters: Check engine oil, hydraulic fluid, coolant, water separator, fuel and air filters. Replace or fill as needed. Inspect fuel system, air intake and hydraulics for leaks. Clean out the radiator and coolers.

  • Battery & Electrical System: Inspect battery cables, clean battery terminals, check electrolyte level, and ensure lights and controls function properly.

  • Tires: Inspect for wear, check air pressure, and inflate as necessary according to your owner's manual.

  •  Belts & Hoses: Look for cracks, leaks, and signs of wear.

Hay Tools - Your hay tools work hard, so give them the attention they deserve:

  • General Inspection: look for signs of wear, rust or loose bolts, and remove any leftover debris from moving parts. Grease all grease points as needed, clean hydraulic connections and check hydraulic hoses and connections for leaks. Check and replace any worn or missing guarding.

  •  Mowers & Conditioners: Check belts for wear and inspect disc blades. Replace as needed. Check cutterbar and gearbox oil levels. Replace or fill as needed.

  • Tedders & Rakes: Check for broken or bent tines and repair or replace where necessary.

  • Balers: Thoroughly inspect belts, chains and tensioners, pickup teeth, pickup cams and rollers, along with the bearings.

Tip: Refer to the scheduled maintenance intervals chart in your operator’s manual for a more detailed checklist of the recommended maintenance intervals for your hay equipment.

Taking the time to complete a thorough pre-season check can help ensure your Kubota tractors and hay tools operate efficiently when you need them most.  If you need specific maintenance recommendations or assistance for your Kubota equipment, refer to your operator's manual or consult your local dealer for expert support.

Prepare Your Land for Spring: Essential Tractor Implements

As winter recedes and the promise of spring emerges, it's the perfect time to ready your land for the upcoming season. Equipping your tractor with the right implements can make all the difference in achieving a productive season—because even the most capable machine needs the right tools to bring your projects to life.

When shopping for implements for your Kubota tractor, look no further than Land Pride. Land Pride's performance-matched attachments and implements are designed to work seamlessly with Kubota equipment.

Here are four essential Land Pride implements to help you check off your spring to-do list without breaking a sweat:

Rotary Tillers

Whether you're planting food plots to attract wildlife, establishing privacy hedges for a natural border, or prepping the soil for nutrient-rich cover crops, a rotary tiller is the key to getting your land ready for planting. Land Pride's Rotary Tillers are designed to break up and mix soil efficiently, creating an ideal seedbed for whatever you’re planting. With various sizes available to match your Kubota tractor, these tillers help ensure proper soil aeration and nutrient distribution, giving your plants the best possible start to the season.

Mowers/Cutters

As spring arrives, grass growth kicks into high gear, and keeping your property well-maintained requires the right mower for the job. If you’re looking for a clean, professional finish on large lawns, pastures, or estates, a Land Pride Grooming Mower is the perfect match for your Kubota tractor.

For tackling rougher terrain, taller grass, or light brush, a Land Pride Rotary Cutter is the better choice. These rugged mowers handle pastures, roadside ditches, and overgrown fields with ease, making them essential for property maintenance beyond manicured lawns.

Post Hole Diggers

Spring often brings about projects like installing fences, planting trees, or setting up new structures. Land Pride's Post Hole Diggers make these tasks more manageable. With options accommodating augers ranging from 6 to 24 inches in diameter, these PTO or hydraulically driven diggers ensure efficiency and precision, helping you to complete your projects with confidence.

Landscape Rakes

Maintaining a clean and level landscape is essential for both aesthetics and functionality. Land Pride’s Landscape Rakes are perfect for spreading rock, removing debris, preparing seedbeds, and reshaping soil surfaces and terrain. These rakes help you achieve a polished look while keeping your land smooth, level, and well-maintained.

By integrating these performance-matched Land Pride implements with your Kubota tractor, you're well-equipped to tackle the many tasks that come with spring property maintenance. Whether you're preparing fields, enhancing your landscape, or embarking on new projects, these implements deliver the reliability and performance you expect from Kubota and Land Pride.

With nearly a zero-degree turning radius, Kubota’s zero-turn mowers combine the comfort of a sit-down mower with the efficiency of a walk-behind mower to nimbly navigate yards of any kind. If your property has flower beds, trees, or other hard-to-maneuver obstacles, rest assured your Z400 Series zero-turn mower can get the job done.

Available at authorized Kubota dealers starting in the first quarter of 2025, Kubota has added two new EFI models to its Z400 Series with the introduction of the Z452KWi-54 and Z452KWTi-60

The new Z400EFI models feature a powerful 26-horsepower1 Kawasaki FT Series engine, and a rugged Hydro-Gear Commercial ZT-3600 transmission designed to deliver professional-quality performance, reliability, and efficiency.

Available in 54-inch and 60-inch cutting decks, the Z452 is a premium addition to the Z400 Series with standard features like an effortless push button start, vibration-reducing weighted control levers, a check engine light and an advanced hour meter, and semi-pneumatic flat-free front tires.

The “One and Done” - Kubota BX & L Series, Sub-Compact and Compact Tractors

If you’re looking for more than mowing help, Kubota’s compact tractors are the versatile, all-in-one solution for you. Mow, clear brush, haul cargo, and so much more with a Kubota BX or L Series tractor.

Built with versatility and durability to tackle the job, Kubota’s compact tractors have earned the designation as the #1-selling compact tractor in the USA2. And for good reason.

Many residential property owners opt for a Kubota BX Series sub-compact tractor, which offer owner-friendly versatility with attachments and implements for a variety of jobs, like mid-mount mower decks, operator-friendly Swift-Tach front loaders, front- and rear-mounted snowblowers, and a full line of industry-leading Land Pride implements.

Though compact in size, the BX Series delivers big results. Plus, its easy-to-store size, allows it to fit into most standard garages.

Looking to upgrade or step up in horsepower? You’ll want to opt for a Kubota L Series compact tractor. Get the same functionality and versatility of a sub-compact tractor but with more power — models range from 23.3 - 48.4 HP1 — depending on your property’s needs.

Durability Meets Speed - Kubota Sidekick

Cover the distance with the speed of the Sidekick, part of the renowned RTV lineup of work-ready utility vehicles from Kubota.

Whether you’re starting a new project or upgrading your fleet, explore these must-have tools designed to meet the needs of your construction site.

Stability Meets Strength: Compact Track Loaders
Navigating tight spaces or tough terrain? Kubota’s compact track loaders are designed to deliver stability and traction on almost any surface. Built for versatility, these machines come in a range of sizes and engine horsepower, making it easy to find the perfect fit for your site’s lifting, moving, and digging needs.

For those seeking a compact option, the SVL50x is an ideal solution. At 48 inches wide, this model is the smallest in Kubota’s compact track loader lineup, yet it delivers impressive power. Equipped with a 49.6-horsepower* Kubota diesel engine, it boasts a rated operating capacity of 1,176 pounds at 35% of the tipping load, and a hinge pin height of 101.6 inches—perfect for tight job sites without compromising performance—and comes standard with KubotaNOW Telematics to help you stay connected and efficient.

If you need more horsepower and lifting capacity, the 96.4 horsepower* SVL97-3 is the ultimate choice. As the largest and most powerful model in Kubota’s SVL lineup, this machine combines strength with advanced features, including a one-piece sealed cab that helps prevent dirt, dust, rain, and debris from entering the operator space. Standard with KubotaNOW Telematics and a swing-out radiator for easy maintenance, it’s designed to maximize productivity and minimize downtime.

Dig In: Excavators
While compact track loaders have digging capabilities, when it comes to deeper trenches and precise excavation work, Kubota excavators are built to deliver reliable performance. Combining durability, strength, and operator-focused design, they’re ready to handle tough jobs with ease.

For smaller, more precise tasks, the U17-5 zero-tail swing compact excavator is an excellent choice. Designed for stability and operator efficiency, it’s small but mighty—ideal for the rental market, light construction, landscaping, and utility applications. Equipped with a 16.1-horsepower* Kubota diesel engine, it offers a digging depth of 7 feet, 6.2 inches, a dumping height of 8 feet, 1.2 inches, and a bucket breakout force of 3,547 pounds.

For larger, more demanding projects, the KX040-5 delivers strength and versatility. With a 40.3-horsepower* Kubota diesel engine, this model is equipped to handle bigger jobs with precision. Key specs include a digging depth of 11 feet, 2.3 inches, and a bucket breakout force of 9,397 pounds. Built with the operator in mind, the KX040-5 features a redesigned hydraulic system, an expanded glass area for better visibility, and user-friendly tech upgrades like a keyless start and KubotaNOW Telematics, all standard on this model.

Outwork Every Day with the RTV-X Series
Kubota’s RTV-X Series utility vehicles are built on a solid, durable frame and powered by Kubota’s dependable diesel engines, ensuring exceptional performance across a range of demanding tasks. This model ensures operators can stay comfortable and efficient no matter the season.

  • The RTV-X CREW is designed for ultimate versatility for the entire worksite. Featuring Kubota’s K-Vertible™ bed system, the RTV-X CREW can seamlessly convert from a one-row configuration with a long bed and maximum cargo space to a two-row setup that seats up to four passengers with a smaller cargo bed. This flexibility makes it ideal for crews that need both passenger capacity and adaptable hauling solutions.

  • RTV-X1130: Built for heavy-duty tasks, the RTV-X1130 features Kubota’s most robust cargo bed platform. Its six-foot-long Pro-Konvert™ bed provides great capacity and customization options for larger loads and the ability to effortlessly load from the side of the vehicle. Additionally, it is equipped with a hydraulic dump bed for quick and efficient unloading, making it ideal for demanding work. With a powerful Kubota diesel engine and independent suspension, the RTV-X1130 offers stability and performance under even the toughest conditions.

Take Advantage of Section 179 Tax Deductions on New Equipment Purchases

As we enter Q4 and quickly approach the end of the year, we want to remind business owners to use Section 179 of the IRS Tax Code. Section 179 can be extremely profitable for your business, allowing you to invest in equipment while keeping more of your tax dollars. According to the IRS under the 2018 tax reform, and subject to limitations, businesses are able to deduct the full purchase price for qualifying equipment – yes, that could include the Kubota you purchased in 2024!

If you bought a piece of equipment in 2024, be sure to check with your CPA or tax preparer about deducting that full amount, as well as eligibility for a 60% bonus depreciation on both new and used equipment for the entirety of 2024. According to Section179.org, this includes qualifying equipment that was purchased in-full, as well as financed.

Buy Early. If you want to take advantage of the Section 179 benefits and deductions, it’s important to note that equipment must be acquired and put into service by December 31, 2024. We know it’s common practice to purchase equipment in the fourth quarter of the year, but don’t delay because equipment that is simply newly purchased but not delivered or used may not qualify until the year it is put into service.

What’s new for 2024? According to Section179.org, this year’s deduction limit is $1,220,000 – a $60,000 increase from last year. This means U.S. companies can deduct the full purchase price of ALL qualified equipment purchases, up to the limit of $1,220,000. In addition, the “total equipment purchase” limit has been raised to $3,050,000 (up from $2.89 million in 2023), meaning more equipment can be purchased and put to work before the $1,220,000 deduction limit is affected. The deduction can include both new and used qualified equipment. Be sure to discuss these limits with your tax preparer to see how your business qualifies.

Bring Purchase and Setup Records to your Tax Appointment. If you purchased equipment in 2024, you will need records that substantiate the date of purchase, the date you started using the equipment, and all costs associated with the purchase, like shipping and setup. If you lost any of this documentation, check with your Kubota dealer to obtain a copy. Your tax preparer can take the Section 179 deduction on certain qualifying business property by electing it, which is done by filling out the required form and including it with your business tax return. Please consult with your certified tax professional for eligibility and limitations that may apply.

Save Even More with Kubota’s Special Offers

Throughout the year, Kubota has a variety of special financing, customer rebates and other offers – many that are valid now through December 31. Visit your local participating Kubota dealer to take advantage of these year-end savings before time runs out.

Kubota Equipment + Performance-Matched Attachments = Stress-Free Fall Maintenance

As the dog days of summer begin to fade and fall’s crisp air and vibrant colors set in, it's time to start thinking about preparing your property for the months ahead. Fall is a perfect time for tackling an assortment of maintenance and cleanup projects that will not only keep your land and lawn looking their best, but also ensure that it’s ready for whatever winter brings. No matter the project, using tractors, mowers, and utility vehicles with the right attachments can make your fall chores efficient, effortless, and even enjoyable.

We’ve compiled a list of some common fall projects and paired them with the perfect companion equipment to help you get every fall job done with ease.

Leaf Cleanup

One of the most telltale signs of fall is the layer of leaves that blankets your lawn. While you might be tempted to leave them as a natural mulch, a thick layer of leaves can smother your grass and lead to lawn damage.

  • Mower + Grass Catcher: To quickly collect leaves as you mow, attach a grass catcher to your lawn mower. This keeps your lawn clear and prevents the buildup of organic material that can hold pests and diseases over the winter.

  • Mower + Mulching Kit: If you prefer to recycle nutrients back into the soil, a mulching kit attachment is a great option.

  • Tractor + Landscape Rake: A Kubota tractor and landscape rake will make quick work of even the biggest leaf cleanup jobs. A landscape rake is also great for removing rocks and other debris.

Clearing Debris

Fall’s season-changing clash of air masses can bring storms and high winds, which often leave your yard littered with tree branches, sticks, and other debris. Removing the remnants of fall storms is essential.

  • Tractor + Grapple: A grapple attachment is ideal for picking up large debris such as fallen branches and limbs. This powerful accessory allows you to lift and move heavy items without straining your back, making yard cleanup a breeze.

  • RTV + Debris Blower: For debris like leaves, bark, or loose dirt, a debris blower attachment on your RTV can quickly clear large areas. It’s perfect for driveways and paths.

  • RTV + Rotary Broom: For tougher jobs, such as clearing compacted dirt or thick layers of snow, a rotary broom attachment on an RTV is another great option for giving your hard surfaces a thorough cleaning.

Lawn Upkeep: Aerating, Fertilizing, and Overseeding

To keep your lawn lush and green, fall is a great time to aerate, fertilize, and overseed. These tasks help your grass recover from summer stress and prepare it for the dormant winter.

  • Tractor + Aerator: Aerating your lawn relieves soil compaction and improves water and nutrient absorption. Attach an aerator to your tractor to quickly cover large areas, creating the best conditions for overseeding and fertilizing.

  • RTV + Spreader: A spreader attachment on your RTV can evenly distribute fertilizer and grass seed across your lawn. This ensures uniform growth and provides the nutrients your lawn needs to thrive.

Grading Gravel Drives

Maintaining your gravel driveway or paths is essential before winter sets in. Grading helps to smooth out ruts and washouts caused by rain, ensuring a level surface that’s easier to navigate during icy conditions.

  • Tractor + Box Blade: Use a box blade attachment on your tractor to level and grade your driveway. The blade moves gravel back into low spots and scrapes away any bumps, leaving a smooth, even surface.

  • Tractor + Grading Scraper: Similar to a box blade, a grading scraper is perfect for grading-off high spots and filling in low spots on gravel driveways but doesn’t require additional horsepower or engaging 3-point hitch controls on the tractor.

Prepping for the Hunt

If you’re an avid hunter, it’s likely that you’ve been eagerly awaiting the arrival of fall so you can prepare your food plots and trails. Proper preparation ensures a successful hunting season and can also improve the overall condition of your property.

  • Tractor + Rotary Cutter: A rotary cutter attachment is ideal for clearing brush and tall grass from your hunting trails and plots. This creates clear paths and open spaces where wildlife is easier to spot.

  • RTV + Bed Extender: Use a bed extender to carry coolers, equipment, or your trophy buck. This accessory increases your RTV’s carrying capacity, making it more versatile for hunting-related tasks.

Investing in performance-matched implements and accessories not only saves you time, but it also helps ensure that your property remains in top shape all year long. Whether you’re tending to your lawn, maintaining your driveway, or preparing for hunting season, tractors, mowers, and RTVs equipped with the appropriate attachments can help you effortlessly tackle your fall to-do list.

Conquering the Elements: The All-Season Advantages of Cabs

Whether you're working the land or navigating rugged terrain, facing the elements on an outdoor job is inevitable. From the sweltering days of summer to the frigid cold of winter – with unpredictable rainy weather in between – equipment operators need reliable protection to help maintain productivity and comfort.

Enter, climate-controlled Kubota cabs. With a diverse lineup of cabs for tractors, RTVs and construction equipment, Kubota can help you fend off the elements and work until the job is done, no matter the season and what mother nature has in store.

Spring: Resisting Rain and Avoiding Allergens

Everyone knows that spring weather is unpredictable. Operating equipment with a cab can help eliminate the guesswork of weather forecasts, offering peace of mind and protection from cool, rainy days. Enclosed cabs can help reduce exposure to springtime allergens as well, making them an invaluable “sidekick” in enhancing comfort and reducing allergy-related side effects that can hinder efficiency. Kubota's full-size gas utility vehicle, the Sidekick, has a dealer-installed cab with optional heat available, making it the perfect companion for seeding and fertilizing, spring calving season, and building fences on those cool spring days.

Many Kubota tractors are available with a climate-controlled cab, like the MX series. During the spring planting season, using a tractor with a cab can help ensure that fields are tilled, fertilized, and planted on time, rain or shine, hot or cold, day or night. The wide, spacious MX series cab features a flat platform with plenty of legroom, tilt-steering, air conditioning and heating, easy access and use of operator levers and controls as well as the ability to accessorize it to fit your needs.

Summer: Beat the Heat

The stifling heat of summer can be a major setback when working outside, but cabs equipped with air conditioning provide refreshing relief. This key feature – available on the LX20 Series, for example – can help mitigate heat-related illnesses like heat stroke and exhaustion, allowing operators to work effectively. The LX20’s factory-installed cab also includes a 4-pillar design with rounded glass, offering plenty of space, and panoramic views of your surroundings—providing excellent field of vision along with the comfort of the cab.

Fall: Comfortable Harvest and Hunt

During the demanding activities of fall, comfort is crucial. Cabs with advanced temperature control systems, like the spacious cabs available on the Grand L60 and the L60LE series, maintain a comfortable environment inside, which is essential during the long hours spent in the field, woods, or yard.  And as fall mornings and evenings become more crisp, a heated cab can provide extra warmth and comfort to operators.

Kubota’s RTV- X1100C – the first utility vehicle in the industry to offer a factory-installed, climate-controlled cab – is a great option for completing a variety of fall jobs outdoors. Built around a unibody frame, the cab incorporates highly efficient heating and defogging functions, as well as antennas and speakers for an optional radio, keeping you dry, comfortable, and informed, no matter the weather outside.

Winter: Warmth and Security

Winter’s harshest elements, like sleet, snow, cold, and wind, can be ruthless. Cabs equipped with heating systems – like that of a dealer-installed BX Series cab – help shield operators from bitter cold and precipitation. Navigating snowy and icy conditions while performing winter tasks – like plowing snow – are completed in comfort and security in a heated cab.

All-Season Advantages

Beyond seasonal defense, Kubota cabs are designed with comfort in mind. Adjustable, ergonomic seats and controls allow operators to customize their environment for maximum comfort during long hours of work outdoors.

Another key feature is noise reduction, which can help prevent distractions from the operator and lessen operator fatigue. This is especially important in the construction sector. Learn more about the benefits of construction equipment cabs and how they can meet business and operator needs.

Bottom line? Climate-controlled Kubota cabs offer an abundance of benefits, helping you face the many adversities mother nature presents, elevating protection from inclement weather and improving productivity. To beat the heat, conquer the cold, and stop extreme weather from hindering your work, consider equipment with a cab. A Pro’s POV: Top Turf Tips from an Expert In (and on) the Field

At Kubota, we don’t just build equipment. We build the right equipment to provide our customers with the solutions they need to keep their businesses running, their properties looking good and the pride in their work stronger than ever. We recently sat down with John Torres, director of grounds at WSFS Bank Sportsplex and Subaru Park (home to the Philadelphia Union Professional Soccer Club), to talk about those equipment solutions in action and learn what it takes to thrive in sports turf management.

Whether you’re a professional looking for some refreshers, or a homeowner wanting to incorporate professional-grade landscaping practices into your own lawn, we’ve summarized key insights from John and his experience, below.

You can also watch the full conversation on Kubota’s YouTube channel.

Equipment Mix & Maintenance

Anyone who works in landscaping or cares for their home lawn should understand the different terrains and grass types that they will be maintaining. This will affect your equipment mix and determine what Kubota equipment will help you achieve your turf goals. John and his team bring a mix of compact tractors and implements for heavy duty work on the grounds - like aerating the field - while a fleet of Kubota zero-turn and stand-on mowers keep the Sportsplex manicured to perfection.

Just as important as the equipment mix is machine maintenance. To help get started, the operator’s manual for your Kubota equipment is a helpful resource, but there are also visual guides – like this one - on YouTube. Staying on top of a maintenance routine will help ensure your equipment is running in tip-top shape. Advice from pros like John? Create a spreadsheet that you can access, and log the tasks performed to better track routine maintenance and stay on schedule. Or use the maintenance tracking tool available in the myKubota app.

Pre-season Prep & Soil Testing

  • For the professional: Soil testing is a critical step in prepping for the busy AND slower seasons. The data revealed from a test informs the entire care approach, especially in choosing the right nutrients and how much to apply. To that end, a soil test helps your bottom line by allowing you to more carefully understand the amount of nutrients to apply vs. wasting them. John and his team test a field at least once a quarter due to ever changing environmental conditions.

  • For the homeowner: Likewise, soil testing can be greatly beneficial to the homeowner, giving a more accurate picture of how to care for your lawn. For homeowners, once or twice a year is sufficient. Consider testing about four plugs of soil from your front and back yard. Your local extension service is a great resource for conducting the actual soil analysis and helping you understand the results.

Nutrients and Applications

  • For the professional: Much like Subaru Park, a large property will require a diverse blend of nutrients, advised by results of the soil test. It’s very important to understand your soil pH level and how you should apply other micro and macro nutrients.

  • For the homeowner: Begin with the end in mind. If you plan to overseed some areas of the property, for example, know that you should not use a pre-emergent, as the two practices contradict each other. If you do overseed, you will need to spot treat areas with herbicide when you notice unwanted weeds.

Aeration

John and his Subaru Park team works with a field that sees a lot of foot traffic and abuse over the playing season, thus, aerating on a bi-weekly basis is necessary. Consider this approach and frequency depending on how easily your job’s ground compacts. Selecting the type of aeration you use (e.g., solid tine, core or slicing) will depend on the amount of recovery time the ground needs and if you have that time available. John’s team uses the slicing method, as it is the quickest and easiest solution for their needs, and they deploy the right implement to their Kubota tractor to complete the job.

Mowing

Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a home lawn care enthusiast consider these three essential mowing tips to maintain a healthy, lush lawn:

  1. Vary the mowing direction each time you mow to prevent soil compaction and encourage even growth – especially if you mow often, like at Subaru Park.

  2. Abide by the 1/3 rule. Avoid cutting more than one-third of the grass height at a time to mitigate stress on the grass and promote deeper roots.

  3. Keep your mowing blades sharp to ensure a clean and efficient cut; this helps maintain the lawn’s appearance and condition, alike. For more tips on keeping your blades sharp, check out our Machine and Blade Maintenance Guide.

National Lawn Care Month: Tips for Year-Round Turf Maintenance

Landscape professionals and lawn care lovers know the job is a full-year commitment for lawn excellence, whether it’s using the off season to prep for the busy season or full speed ahead in the warmer months of the year. But this month, April is National Lawn Care Month as observed by the National Association of Landscape Professionals, and we are grateful to have the spotlight shine on the industry with much deserved recognition.

In honor of National Lawn Care Month, the Kubota turf team shares their tried-and-true tips for lawn care excellence any month of the year. Save this blog, if you’re a newbie here, or if you’ve been on our turf before, revisit these basics with fresh eyes. Here's what you need to know.

Know your grass: From afar, all grass may look the same. But take a walk from lawn to lawn, and you’ll realize that there are nuances galore under foot. Understanding the grass you are about to take to task is crucial to caring for your lawn. Ask and answer these questions: what type of grass grows on this lawn – cool season, transitional or warm season? What growing patterns do I recognize? From here, you’ll be able to devise a smart approach to managing the grass and building a better schedule (more on that below!). Need to know more? Consult your local landscape pro for tips.

Know your equipment: Before you even think about hopping on your machine to mow, make sure you understand your mower and how to operate it safely. Get to know your Kubota equipment through the operator’s manual for maintenance guidance, safety tips and how to operate. Now that you know your grass a bit better, check the size of the property and the time you have available to ensure you have the right equipment. Sit-down mowers, like the Z400 zero turn series, are popular for their comfort on longer, more expansive jobs, while a stand-on mower, such as the Kubota SZ Series, works well in intricate and narrow lawns. Want more? Check out our guide to Kubota’s sit, stand and walk-behind mowers.

Know your schedule : Frequent mowing helps promote improved density in certain turfgrass varieties. Purdue University and University of Illinois confirm you should never mow more than 1/3 of the leaf blade in a single mow. During spring or summer this could mean two to three times per week depending on the turf growth rate. These expert sources also recommend leaving grass clippings in the lawn vs. bagging it to maintain nutrients to the overall turfgrass. You should also stick to a consistent watering schedule. Generally, in most summers, water as soon as the grass shows signs of water stress, which include gray coloring and depressed footprints when walking across the lawn.

Know your mower blades: Speaking of the health of your grass, blade maintenance is crucial to allow your lawn to thrive. A poor cut due to dull blades will increase susceptibility to diseases and insects, which could compromise the turf grass’ response to environmental stresses like drought or heat. Sharpen up with blade maintenance tips here: Start the Mowing Season Right: Machine and Blade Maintenance Guide.

Know your maintenance schedule: Just like the lawn, your machine requires routine care and maintenance for longevity. If you’re just now getting the mower out of the shed, be sure to prep your machine for the season. Consistent checks on your drive and deck belts, air and oil filters and tire pressure will allow you to stay on schedule and on your way to achieving your lawn care goals. To brush up on your equipment’s schedule, be sure to read your Kubota’s operator manual or consult the myKubota app for machine-specific guidance.

With April in full swing, the best way to honor National Lawn Care Month is by putting these tips to practice. If you’re considering expanding your turf lineup, explore all Kubota mowers to find what’s right for you. As always, your local Kubota dealer can be an excellent resource for guidance on mower maintenance and purchases.

Start the Mowing Season Right: Machine and Blade Maintenance Guide

With every new season, you may be dreaming up plans to achieve your landscaping and large property goals. Now is a great time to start thinking about how to best prepare for a head start this spring.

Give Your Mower a Test Run

If it’s been a while since your last drive, give your mower a test run to feel out the ride and check for any signs of maintenance or repair needs, such as blade performance. You may consider mowing a test patch and closely inspecting your work to make sure everything is cutting properly. Turf grass blades that are crushed, shredded, jagged or uneven indicate the blades should be sharpened. Visible nicks, dents and bends in your blades are also telltale signs they need to be sharpened or replaced.

Not only is blade sharpening efficient for your future mowing, but it’s also better for the health of the turf grass. A poor cut will increase susceptibility to diseases and insects, which could compromise the turf grass' response to environmental stresses like drought or heat.

Ensure Your Blades Are Straight, Sharp and Balanced

Mower blades will become dull over time and may have encountered some yard debris. Sharpening your blades 2-3 times a year will help give your lawn or property a clean, professional cut.

Before you take care of your blades, ensure you’ll be safe during the process. Wear personal protective equipment, confirm the mower is off and disconnect the battery.

For full instructions on sharpening mower blades and other maintenance operations, check your operator’s manual.

To sharpen your own mower blades:

  1. Before checking or replacing the blade, wipe grass and mud off the top and inside of the mower deck. Make sure to clean the inside of the belt cover, otherwise, the belt life will be reduced.

  2. Wedge a block of wood between the blade and mower housing or use a box wrench over the pulley nut to prevent the spindle from rotating while removing the blade bolts, then loosen the blade bolts. Use the proper metric-size box or socket wrench to tighten or loosen the blade mounting bolt.

  3. Clamp the blade securely in a vise. Use a large mill file and file along the original bevel until sharp.

  4. To check the blade for balance, place a small rod through the center hole. If the blade is not balanced, file the heavy side of the blade until balance is achieved. Unbalanced blades could result in premature wear of spindles and other deck components, as well as pose a safety risk.

  5. Pass the spline boss through the plate, blade and 2 cup washers, and tighten the bolt.

  6. Make sure that the cup washer is not flattened out or worn; this could cause the blade to slip excessively. Replace the 2 cup washers if either is damaged.

Prep the Machine for the Season

As you get closer to firing your mower up for the season, especially if it’s been in storage, prep your machine with these maintenance guidelines.

  1. Add fresh fluids – Starting the season with fresh fluids is essential to proper starting and running. Gasoline breaks down over time, which could cause your mower to perform poorly or not start at all. Drain the remaining gasoline out of the machine so you can start fresh. A good rule is to drain it at the end of each season before you put the mower in storage.

  2. Change the oil and filter – Before you get your Kubota mower rolling, you’ll want to change the oil. Dirty oil can damage your engine, shorten the engine’s life and cause future maintenance problems. Refer to your operator’s manual for specific oil and oil filter service intervals.

  3. Inspect all belts for failure points – When inspecting your machine’s belts or changing your oil, be sure to allow the engine to cool down, as the oil inside will be hot and could cause burns.

  4. Check all switches – During your inspection, make sure all switches are working properly.

  5. Check tire air pressures - Improperly inflated tires could result in poor cut quality.

  6. Check the deck level and adjust the anti-scalp rollers - A properly leveled and adjusted deck can help you achieve the best possible cut quality from your mower.

  7. Rely on Kubota Genuine Parts – If you find any need for replacement parts during your inspection, Kubota Genuine Parts can be supplied by your local Kubota dealer or purchased online at shop.kubotausa.com.

For full details on the guidelines mentioned above and more, please refer to your Kubota mower operator’s manual. If you own a Z Series mower, you can also find our Know Your Kubota YouTube video series for maintenance tips. And of course, your local dealership is also a valuable resource for any questions about your machine or for service inquiries.

The Dirt on Compact Excavators: 5 Tips for Efficient Digging

When it comes to the jobsite, seasoned contractors know that bigger doesn’t always mean better. In fact, the correctly sourced compact excavator can out-work its larger counterpart in certain job sites that require tight turns and precision digging. Make efficient work around your job site with Kubota’s line of compact excavators, built to navigate tighter spaces with ease and efficiency.

Here are 5 tips to dig strategically, efficiently, and safely:

  1. Call Before You Dig – 811 is the national “call before you dig” phone number. You can call 811 or visit 811.com at least a few business days before you dig. You simply cannot skip this step. Not only is it the law, but if you hit a power line, gas line, or even a communication line, neither the unstable environment or the massive fines are worth the risk. When you call 811 your project will be tagged and a local utility will assign a series of colored flags onsite, indicating where power lines, sewer, natural gas, communication, and even future planned excavation. Stay outside of the tolerance zone when digging, which is 36 inches to either side of the flags. Do not start digging before the site has been inspected and through 811.

  1. Pick the right sized excavator. Even the most experienced contractors sometimes are tempted to pick the “bigger” machine. We get it – big machines with big power are exciting! However, it’s important to consider other conditions including gate entrance, dump height, and even onsite storage when selecting the right size of excavator for the job at hand. At Kubota, we engineer powerful compact excavators, designed to exceed your jobsite needs on a compact level. Check your gate openings, needed dig depth, precision placement and then know with confidence that there is a machine to fit this exact job, and don’t worry about the power, we’ll still impress you there, too.

Even Kubota’s smallest compact excavators feature surprisingly wide working and digging ranges for their compact frames. The K008-5 has a working range that includes a digging depth of 5 ft. 8 in. and a bucket breakout force of 2,205 lbs., and the U10-5 extends to a 5 ft. 11 in. digging depth with a bucket breakout force of 2,337 lbs. Of course, if you do need to go up in size, Kubota has you covered with the new and top-of-the-line KX080-5 delivers power and efficiency for its size with a 66.6 horsepower* engine, digging depth of 15 ft. 1.1 in. and a bucket breakout force of 14,660 lbs.

  1. Map it out! Ensure you are level and have ample swing space. Now that you know about what’s buried under ground, assess what’s happening above and devise a plan. Be aware of others working in the vicinity and utilize safety barriers as required. Check for obstacles, and make sure to include a large and level working space for your compact excavator. Accidents on jobsites can occur by equipment not operating on a secure, level surface. Take your time with positioning – so that you can be efficient when digging and not constantly re-positioning to secure balance. Walk around your excavator before starting it and acquaint yourself with the “swing zones” to be sure you have plenty of room. If you are operating around a utility, it is advised that you have a spotter to monitor that you keep a safe distance from any marked flags.

  1. Get acquainted with your loading capabilities. When operating a compact excavator, it’s important to always check your maximum dump height so that you don’t lose material before reaching the truck bed you are loading. Operators should also know the truck’s maximum load so you know how many buckets you can fill before having to stop, avoiding an overload.

  1. Get to work. Build your fleet. There are some excavators that will meet a wide variety of jobsite needs. But not all contractor work is the same, and there is a Kubota compact excavator that is perfect for you.

“With the addition of the new KX080-5, we continue to have a strong offering of compact excavator models across the 1-to-8-ton weight classes, and feature more flexibility among the conventional and minimal tail swing lines,” said Bill Holton, Kubota construction equipment product manager. “All of our -5 generation models are solidly engineered and outfitted with more customization to keep customers working efficiently and comfortably.”

While seasoned contractors might conduct some of these tasks routinely, it’s always worth a refresher and never skip re-evaluating when safety and efficiency is on the line. For more information on Kubota’s full line of compact and utility sized excavators please visit kubotausa.com/construction

Sit, Stand, and Walk-Behind: A Case for Having All Three in Your Fleet

In the fast-paced world of commercial landscaping, the choice of equipment can significantly impact efficiency, productivity, and the overall success of your landscaping business. One important decision landscape professionals face is the type of equipment to invest in, whether sit-down, stand-on, or walk-behind. Each mower comes with its own set of advantages and use cases, and a carefully calculated combination of all three can prove to be a game-changer for your fleet.

The Sit-Down Advantage: Comfort and Efficacy

Sit-down, zero-turn mowers, like the Kubota Z700 Series, have long been a go-to in the landscaping industry for good reason. The rider comfort they offer during long hours of operation is unmatched. These machines are equipped with premium adjustable suspension seats to suit operator physique and preference, easy-to-use controls, and other features that enhance the commercial mowing experience.

Sit-down mowers, especially the larger models, cover more ground in less time. This leads to increased efficiency, allowing landscaping professionals to expand their portfolio to take on larger projects without sacrificing quality. Whether it's maintaining large lawns, golf courses, or city parks, the Kubota sit-down zero-turn mower is a powerful tool in effectively tackling big jobs and increasing your landscaping company’s profitability

The Stand-On Benefit: Flexibility and Compact Design

Stand-on mowers have gained traction with landscape professionals, due in part to their unique blend of mobility and compact design. These machines offer operators the freedom to step on and off quickly. Moreover, they are ideal for properties with elaborate landscapes and tight spaces  –  like narrow paths and gates – due to their size-considerate width, wheelbase and responsive steering function. These features allow for efficient navigation around obstacles, ensuring a more precise cut without sacrificing speed.

One of the most appreciated attributes of stand-on mowers is their increased visibility over traditional sit-down mowers, giving the operator a better view of their work, and ultimately leading to increased accuracy and decreased trimming and overall job time. The ergonomic features on a stand-up mower are unmatched, too. From a cushion pad, to adjustable items including the reference bar and dampened controls – these mowers truly are customizable to fit each operator, allowing them to seamlessly complete any job.

The Walk-Behind Competencies: Precision and Ease of Access

While sit-down and stand-on mowers have their advantages, the walk-behind mower is tough enough for every kind of turf and well-suited for properties with varying terrain, slopes, or hard-to-reach areas. Walk-behind mowers give operators greater control and precision, allowing them to navigate tight turns, narrow spaces and other tricky landscapes with ease.

The versatility of walk-behind mowers extends beyond mowing. With the addition of optional accessories, walk-behind mowers offer landscape professionals the ability to mulch and bag. What’s more? New ergonomic bull horn control design – like that found in the Kubota W Series WHF15 – will help you get your jobs done faster and more comfortably, with integrated Hydro-Gear transmissions producing speeds up to 6.5 mph.

Finding the Right Balance: Why All Three are a Winning Combination

While each type of mower has its individual strengths, combining them within your commercial landscaping fleet can ensure that your team is well-equipped to take on any challenge. A well-balanced fleet that includes sit-down, stand-on, and walk-behind mowers allows landscaping professionals to tackle diverse projects with peak efficiency, operational flexibility, a reduction in downtime and heightened operator satisfaction.

Kubota makes it easy for business owners to incorporate all three mowers into your fleet. Designed with landscaping professionals in mind, the Kubota Fleet Program* allows you to grow and invest in your entire business. Commercial customers of all sizes are eligible for a fleet discount with the purchase of just one unit. If you ever have a unit go down, your local dealer has you covered with Kubota’s Ever-Go Loaner program. These are just a few examples of Kubota’s commitment to help your business succeed.

Getting the Most out of Your Compact Tractor

Your property’s chore list is growing, and you find yourself considering your options for a new tractor. It’s likely that a compact tractor could suit your needs, thanks to its versatility and ability to tackle an abundance of jobs with ease - from gardening and lawn mowing, to moving logs, small hay bales and big snow piles. Whether you’re ready to upgrade, put your smaller tractor out to pasture, or need some help harnessing your current tractor’s versatility, we’ve put together a list of five simple things to help your understand and get the most out of your compact tractor:

Assess Your Acreage + Applications

Operating the right tractor for your property is ultimately dependent on the tasks that need to be completed, along with the number of acres needing maintenance, and overall property size. Contrary to popular belief, many compact tractors offer a smaller compact size without compromising on horsepower. Take the Kubota LX20 Series for example: The LX offers Special Utility models that pack both value and offer deluxe quality features into a comfortable, easy to operate, and hard-working compact tractor. Running at up to 40hp, compact tractor models like these can allow for a greater variety of performance-matched implements – including the added benefit of having a mid-PTO as a standard piece of equipment.

Build with Tires

Once you’ve pinpointed your applications and acreage, then you can roll into tire selection. Depending on the job at hand and type of ground you’re working on, there are different tire options available to help match your tractor to the task. For example, if you’re working on established lawns and prefer minimum turf damage, turf tires are the best fit. Whereas, industrial tires are great for excellent traction and moderate ground disturbance, and agricultural tires are ideal for maximum traction applications. Looking for a variance? Hybrid tires combine the traction of agricultural tires with the minimal ground disturbance of turf.

Cab vs. Open Air

Another detail to think about when selecting the best tractor for your needs is a tractor with a cab vs. one without. For work in extreme elements, a cab will enhance both your experience and performance, offering year-round comfort. On the other hand, open tractors are a more affordable option, but you will become more exposed to less desirable variables, like intense weather.

Determine a Dealer

Oftentimes overlooked, the quality of your dealership is an important item to take into consideration. Your dealer relationship will extend well beyond the point of purchase – from customer service, to parts, to ongoing knowledge and support. Having a local dealer you know and trust is key to a positive tractor owning experience for many years to come. Find your local Kubota dealer here.

Explore Electives

There are a number of choices when it comes to tractor attachments, implements, and elective options. Some of the most popular attachments and implements are front loaders, rotary cutters and box blades, due to how they are used for material handling, ground maintenance and road maintenance, ultimately increasing efficiency. Other premium operator features include quiet-to-operate hydrostatic transmission (HST), auto-throttle, and dual engine memory switches, allowing the operator to preset their preferred RPMs and have the engine match that speed at the push of a button.  As you review your list of applications, you can begin to choose attachments and add-ons that best fit the size and scale of the job. Exploring these options can also help decide on horsepower and lift capacity requirements and make it easier to hone in on the best compact tractor model for you.

No doubt, selecting the perfect tractor for your acreage can be a daunting task. Whether you think you might be ready to upgrade, or if you have yet to push your compact tractor to its limits, consider these tips as your guide to assess what’s possible to move your property to its fullest potential with a powerful machine.

Top Tips for Prepping Hay Tools for Winter

Cooler weather serves as a reminder of all the necessary end of season work that needs to be done before winter sets in. And that includes prepping hay tools properly for winter storage to ensure they are ready to go to work when hay season comes around again next spring. Maintaining and preparing equipment for seasonal storage is important for every farm and acreage, and Kubota has compiled our top tips to help you get your hay tools ready for winter.

Balers

Baling can be messy and dusty, so do yourself and your baler a favor by cleaning out any remaining hay and debris before storing for the winter. Be sure to take the extra step and blow out any remaining dust and debris.

Balers may have wear points that require attention in season and at the end of season too. Thoroughly inspect belts, pickup teeth, pickup cams and rollers, along with the bearings. Net wrap and knotting systems also deserve attention to make sure they are functioning properly before being stored. Better yet, contact your local Kubota dealer to schedule your baler inspection service. If anything requires additional maintenance or parts, make this a priority before moving the baler into storage. You can find Kubota Genuine Parts at your local Kubota dealer or online at shop.kubotausa.com.

Rakes & Tedders

Tines, bearings and universal joints require an end of season inspection, especially on rakes and tedders. Grease necessary moving parts and consult the operator’s manual for other necessary maintenance items. Check for broken or bent tines and repair or replace where necessary.

Mowing Equipment

Disc mowers and disc mower conditioners are made up of plenty of moving parts, and they all need to be inspected, greased and stored in working order. Check belts for wear and replace where needed. Special attention should be given to inspecting disc blades and replacing as needed. Mowing equipment also requires a thorough cleaning, removing any hay or plant material, power washing and blowing out tight spaces to remove dust and debris. Proper winter maintenance will ensure the machine performs when it’s needed next year and ready for another busy hay season.

Optimize Next Year’s Equipment Operation

Prepare for optimal equipment operation next year by ensuring your hay tools are properly washed and cleaned, which can help extend their lifespan but also uncovers areas in need of attention or repair. Address any required maintenance or part replacements now, avoiding the springtime rush on the farm.

When it comes to winter storage for your hay equipment, choose a secure, dry location. This year-end maintenance and storage strategy is an investment in your equipment that will help pay off in time saved next spring.

Need help with winter maintenance? Your local dealer has your back. From preventative maintenance and routine checkups to total system repairs, entrust your equipment to certified Kubota technicians at your local Kubota dealership. Connect with your local dealership today to tap into their wealth of expertise, covering everything from service and maintenance to sourcing Genuine Kubota Parts.

Cold Temps, Hot Tips: A Winter Maintenance Guide for Your Equipment

While the colder temperatures may bring some work to a halt, there are many jobs that will roll on through the depths of winter. Proper winter maintenance for your equipment is critical to ensuring a smooth transition into seasonal work.

We’ve compiled some of the best tips from Kubota product managers for navigating the winter months and getting the most out of your equipment. As always, be sure to consult your equipment’s operator’s manual in addition to this guide for model-specific recommendations and routine maintenance instructions. Download the myKubota app to have your operator’s manual accessible from anywhere.

  1. Utilize the season for repairs - If there is a season that presents itself with natural downtime, it’s winter. Use this time to fully inspect and repair your equipment. If you’re in need of parts, your local Kubota dealer or shop.kubotausa.com has you covered with Kubota Genuine Parts.

  2. Inspect before using your machine - Daily inspections are critical to identify areas of normal wear and tear that could lead to serious or expensive repairs if left unchecked. Examine fluid hoses regularly for cracks – cold temperatures may put added stress on major machine components, including hoses which may crack in very cold temperatures. Other areas to inspect include oil and grease lubrication, coolant, fuel levels, battery function, the undercarriage, and the tires or tracks.

  3. Keep it clean - Clean the undercarriage regularly – excess snow, salt, and ice can get stuck to the machine causing performance and mobility issues.

  4. Warm it up - Allow the equipment to properly warm up. Refer to your owner’s manual to determine appropriate warming time before operations. Adding a block heater to the machine will help decrease warm up time and more efficiently heat the cab if appropriate for your model.

  5. Use the proper fuel and fluids – As seasons change and the temperature gets colder, make sure you have the proper fuel and additives available to prevent fuel gelling. The same applies to engine oil and hydraulic oil replacements with suitable viscosities for cold weather. Consult your owner’s manual or local dealer for model-specific recommendations for fuel and oil types, especially if you will be storing your machine for a long period of time.

  6. Store indoors – Storing the equipment inside a dry shed or building can reduce the winter strain on the equipment. When storing indoors, it is important that the building is not too warm to prevent any accumulated condensation from freezing and causing unintended performance issues. Oftentimes, it is better to store frequently used equipment in an unheated building to minimize condensation and temperature shock. If you must store your equipment outdoors, make sure to cover it with a waterproof tarp. Also make sure you have cleaned your equipment thoroughly to prevent mud and moisture from freezing to the equipment.

  7. Protect your battery – In many cases, removing the battery from your equipment before long-term storage can help retain battery life for future machine use. Once removed, store in a dry spot indoors until your next use. You may also benefit from using a battery maintainer to extend battery life. Please consult your operator manual for proper battery storage.

Following these tips during the colder months can help you reduce downtime and transition more easily into the next season. For more questions on winter maintenance and service or to source Kubota Genuine Parts, contact your local dealership

A Contractor’s Guide to Achieving the Utmost Uptime

No matter the line of work, downtime in any sector can be detrimental to a company’s productivity and, ultimately, its bottom line. In construction, equipment failure can lead to hours – even days – of inactivity due to down equipment and repairs, resulting in lost time, lower customer satisfaction and frustration.

Fortunately, there are ways to help mitigate the risk that downtime can bring to a business. We’ve put together a guide of five simple tips to help achieve the utmost uptime while putting excessive downtime in the rear view.

1. Don’t Cut Maintenance Corners

Preventative maintenance is critical to avoid downtime. Regularly review your machinery’s usage and maintenance guidelines and keep up with routine servicing to help keep untimely service needs at bay. The myKubota app is a great resource to easily access operator’s manuals, product literature and other helpful information for maximizing your maintenance habits.

2. Capitalize on KubotaNOW Telematics

KubotaNOW Telematics, available on select models of Kubota construction equipment, offers easy monitoring of performance parameters such as operating times, coolant and oil temperatures, fuel levels, DEF quality, and other benchmarks. This data lets the operator know if something is not working as it should so that it can be promptly remedied without causing further downtime.

3. Stick to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

Oftentimes overlooked, having all machine operators stick to a standard regimen when running equipment can pay dividends in the long run. Simple tasks, be it regular cleaning and correct handling, are key to extending life, reducing excess wear and tear and preventing additional downtime.

Pro tip: When onboarding new staff, explicitly define the SOPs, including expected practices and quality standards that need to be met and annual SOP reviews for all staff to keep everyone up-to-speed and on the same page.

4. Schedule Downtime

Although it may sound counterproductive, scheduling predetermined downtime will help you stay ahead of the curve and be able to make alternative plans for when a piece of machinery isn’t available. When equipment is not in rotation, use that time for scheduled maintenance and upkeep; in doing so, you’ll also help to eliminate costly surprises down the road. If your fleet is larger, try rotating through your equipment so that each piece of machinery is equal in wear, tear and hours of use.

Although downtime is inevitable, by following these tips, you will soon be increasing uptime and reaping in some of the measurable benefits – from less repair costs, to happier customers and employees, alike!

No matter the job, Kubota’s line of construction equipment gives you the power to dig deeper, lift higher and ensure you’re seeing the results you’ve been dreaming of. Visit kubotausa.com to explore equipment models, and stop by your authorized Kubota dealer to see them in person and learn more.

Tractor Loader Backhoe vs. Compact Excavator: Choosing the Right Equipment for the Job

When it comes to construction and landscaping projects, having the right equipment can make all the difference in getting the job done quickly and efficiently. Two commonly used pieces of equipment for excavation and earth-moving tasks are the tractor loader backhoe (TLB) and the compact excavator. While these machines share some similarities, they also have distinct differences that can impact their performance on different job sites. Certain factors like worksite conditions and specific applications will help you determine if a TLB or compact excavator will be best suited for the task at hand.
Let’s dig in.

Worksite Conditions

The size of the worksite and the soil conditions can play a big role in which piece of equipment is the better choice for the job. If you’re working on asphalt, concrete or other hard or abrasive surfaces, the wheels of a TLB are better suited for these surfaces. But if you’re working on soft soils like mud, sand or clay, or on sloped terrain, the tracks on a compact excavator would be a better option with the additional traction they provide.

Getting Around

Depending on the size of the compact excavator, they tend to be lighter and have a smaller footprint than TLBs, which makes them a better option when you need to maneuver narrow spaces such as doorways and gates or want to minimize disturbance to the terrain. For instance, Kubota’s smallest compact excavator in the lineup, the K008-5, weighs in at 2,315 lbs. and the tracks can be adjusted down to 2 ft. 4 inches. Contrast that with the B26, Kubota’s smallest TLB in the lineup, which has an operating weight of 4,001 lbs. and an overall width of 4 ft. 5 inches.

Applications

When it comes to applications, Kubota TLBs and compact excavators both excel at digging, trenching, demolition, heavy lifting and a variety of other tasks. Though, for projects where digging is the main priority, a compact excavator, with a turning range of 360 degrees and, depending on the model, a higher maximum digging depth, could be the better choice. With a total of 13 models ranging from 1 ton to 8 tons, no job is too big or too small for Kubota’s lineup of compact excavators.

On the other hand, if digging is just one of many tasks on your jobsite, the versatility of a TLB could be a better fit. Kubota’s lineup of TLBs, which includes the B26, L47 and M62 are hard-working tractors with efficient front-end loaders that can also handle pallet forks and other implement work. And if your job requires moving material across a large jobsite, a TLB, with its front-end loader and higher top speed is a more efficient option than a compact excavator.

While these are just a few considerations when determining if a TLB or compact excavator is the right piece of equipment for the job, we encourage you to visit your local Kubota dealer who can answer any questions and get you breaking ground in no time.

A Comfortable Operator is a Productive Operator: A Guide to Comfort-Enhancing Features

In a business built around hard deadlines, doing all you can to get the job done is the rule of the day – which often means long hours spent in the cab of a machine. That's why comfort-forward features should be a top priority when considering new construction equipment to ensure operator satisfaction, productivity and job-site safety. We’ve compiled a checklist list to make the job easier.

Climate control and cab protection:

Construction work is always in demand, which sometimes means working in demanding conditions, like scorching heat or chilly winds. Climate control, or HVAC systems, are a crucial feature to protect operators from natural elements that can be unforgiving. Kubota Construction Equipment with enclosed cabs all come with HVAC systems that are sealed to help prevent dust and debris from entering the cab when closed, making for better breathability and visibility. Kubota’s newest compact track loader model, the SVL75-3, also features a one-piece sealed cab that also helps reduce noise levels and a reconfigured HVAC system for exceptional heating and cooling performance.

Visibility and access:

Having the proper space to maneuver and see the worksite within the cab or in the canopy of the unit is also critical. Kubota has made these features a top priority with the introduction of new equipment, such as the new compact excavator KX030-4, which offers a wide entrance, generous legroom and floor space, as well as an ergonomically-designed interior to make the workday more comfortable. A wide entrance and exit design delivers excellent accessibility while retaining clear visibility in both the SVL75-3 and KX030-4. Now standard on the SVL75-3, a rearview camera is integrated into the rear bonnet and offers a 176° range of rearward visibility.

Operator Displays:

Visibility within the cabin cannot be forgotten. In the case of the SVL75-3, a new seven-inch LCD touch panel gives operators access to a wide range of functions and vital information, like battery charge, hydraulic oil and coolant temperature, auxiliary mode and fuel level. It’s also where the standard rear-view camera is displayed. In models that do not offer an LCD panel, the instrument panel should be backlit or large enough, easy-to-read and conveniently positioned to the operator’s line of sight to monitor operations like the panel is in the KX030-4.

Ergonomic seating:

Last, but not least, seat comfort can make jobs that can be a bit rough easier to manage and sustain. When selecting a piece of equipment, look for ergonomic seat features that can help decrease fatigue and increase productivity. Suspension seating cuts down the uncomfortable vibrations of the machine and helps mitigate shock. Also look for design features that support the back, shoulders, and lower torso.

In short, a comfortable operator is a productive operator. The features above provide a good guide to making equipment choices that support your employees, but of course, authorized Kubota dealers in your area are well-equipped to be a resource and answer any question you may have. Click here to find your local Kubota dealer.

Zero-Turn vs. Lawn Tractor: What Type of Mower Is Best for You?

Ready to retire that push mower? Let’s take a look at how zero-turn mowers, lawn and garden tractors, and sub-compact tractors can help you unlock your lawn's full potential (and then some).

Zero-Turn Mowers

These nimble ride-on mowers get their name from their almost zero-degree turning radius. This makes them ideal for yards of all shapes with features like trees, fountains and flower beds. They combine the precision of a walk-behind mower with the comfort and convenience of a ride-on mower.

Choose from a range of deck sizes and travel speeds to fit your property. Larger deck size will get the job done faster, just make sure the mower will fit through your gates and other fixtures. The Kubota Z200 has deck sizes ranging from 42 to 54 inches and travels up to 8 mph, and the Z400 has deck sizes ranging from 48 to 60 inches and travels up to 10 mph. On both models you can help retain moisture or leave a tidy finish with a mulch kit or grass collector.

Lawn and Garden Tractors

Lawn and garden tractors work well for lawns that don’t have a lot of obstacles, such as trees and flower beds. The Kubota GR Series’ All-Wheel Drive (AWD) capabilities provide the traction needed for mowing on rolling terrain. While not intended to be operated on a steep incline, these lawn tractors are a good option for uneven properties.

Grass collection systems are also available on both the Kubota T Series & GR Series lawn tractors for you to customize your mowing experience. As an added bonus, add a snow blower, blade, or sweeper to your lawn tractor for year-round productivity.

Sub-Compact Tractors

Another option to consider for lawn maintenance (and much more) is a sub-compact tractor. The Kubota BX Series  is easy to drive and maneuver, giving you confidence and efficiency for the most challenging mowing jobs.  Its compact size also allows you to easily maneuver between trees and other tight spaces. The mid-mount mower deck is available in two sizes—54" and 60"—to match your specific mowing needs.

Beyond its mowing capabilities, the BX is ideal for residential property owners because of its ability to handle a wide range of projects with ease. Power-packed with a multitude of performance-matched attachments, the BX Series lineup can tackle just about any job on your property.

Still trying to decide? The best place to go for expert tips on selecting the perfect mower for your property is your local Kubota dealer. Find a dealer near you and schedule a demo.

Ready for Anything, Any Time: Your Seasonal Guide to Equipment Preparedness

Just as the seasons change, so do the needs for your property, and the equipment you use to maintain it. How you prepare and use your machinery for weather transitions is extremely important to ensuring the longevity of your units. As an owner and operator of Kubota equipment, it’s your responsibility to be prepared for the changing equipment needs as the conditions change throughout the year. To help, we’ve collected a seasonal guide with the top tips for equipment preparedness and maintenance throughout the year.

Entering Spring & Summer Months

  • Define your projects and ensure you’ve got the right equipment in place: Leading into the spring, assess the goals you have for your property that will begin in the spring and go throughout the summer. For example, will you be introducing a food plot to the land or expanding an already wooded area, or will your focus remain more on landscaping your property? Depending on your answer, you may consider purchasing a new piece of equipment. Units in the L02 Series, like the new L2502 and L4802, combine comfort, modern styling and operability for operations like hobby farming and land maintenance. If landscape maintenance is your priority, consider the updated Z200 for residential mowing or the Z400 for estate or grounds care and mowing. Additionally, the RTV520 provides additional utility to any lineup when it comes to traversing your property and towing for your projects.

  • Get your equipment warm weather ready: Make sure all equipment is ready for the season, especially if it has been in storage all winter. Fully charging your battery and knowing it’s in good condition is a critical first step, as well inspecting the tread and pressure of the unit’s tires. Other essential checks include adding fresh fluids according to the Kubota’s recommended service intervals, changing the oil, inspecting the machine’s belts for wear, examining bearings, chains and sprockets and ensuring parts are properly greased or sharpened.

Entering Fall & Winter Months

  • Conduct routine maintenance: Seasonal maintenance should be conducted regardless of temperatures, including changing fluids and filters. Each climate is different, so it’s important to check your owner’s manual on what fluids to use given your specific model number and your local climate. Consistent inspections are even more critical during the winter months. Taking a few extra minutes every day for daily cleaning and inspections is critical to identify the small problems that can quickly turn major if left unaddressed. Examine fluid hoses regularly for cracks – the added stress of cold temperatures can cause cracking in very cold temperatures. Other areas to inspect include oil and grease lubrication, coolant, fuel levels, battery function and the undercarriage.

  • Keep it clean: Clean the undercarriage regularly – excess snow, salt, and ice can get stuck to the machine causing performance and mobility issues.

  • Store it properly: Housing the equipment inside a shed or building will reduce the winter strain on the equipment. When it’s time to start it up, allow the machine to properly warm up – machine function is better when the engine and machine have time to warm above 40 degrees. Adding a block heater to the machine will decrease warm up time and allow the cab to heat up more rapidly.

  • Assess your attachments: Make sure you have all the winter attachments you need to clear paths and driveways during the winter months, like the snow blower, snow blade and snow trip blade.

When in doubt, Kubota has resources in place to answer your in-the-moment questions, such as the Owner’s Manual, the Know Your Kubota maintenance video series on YouTube, and the myKubota app for guides specific to your equipment. As always, authorized Kubota dealers are a great resource to answer questions about maintenance, readiness and preparation for any season.

Tap into your Kubota Equipment’s Full Potential

You purchased your first unit from Kubota’s lineup of sub-compact or compact tractors, or perhaps you added a new model to your collection. No doubt, you’ve tested a wide range of applications that help you comfortably and efficiently perform routine tasks on your property – from gardening and landscaping to general maintenance and even snow removal.

With an abundance of details designed to meet your specific needs, there are probably some untapped functions that can enhance the completion of any task. That’s why Kubota is here! We’ve put together a list of our favorite not-so-hidden Kubota features. Check them out, and you’ll be tapping into your Kubota’s full potential while completing even the toughest outdoor projects with ease.

Use your Feet

Some of the most underutilized features can be activated with the tap of a heel. Foot controls, like that on the BX Series, can help provide traction – whether driving up steep inclines, digging or trying to pick something up. Understanding 4WD and differential locks are critical in mastering these features as they both inform how the axles and tires of your unit respond to traction requirements of the terrain. For example, while digging into a sand pile, you may need some extra traction to get both rear tires to spin, even while in 4WD.  Let up off the acceleration, step the differential lock lever to the floor with your left heel, and lock both wheels, providing even more traction for pushing material. Consult your operator’s manual for proper operation of the differential lock.

Operation of the Loader with a Float Control

Often overlooked, the float control in Kubota’s sub-compact and compact tractors helps the loader bucket to float while the bucket is locked. The float position can avoid mixing of surface material with stockpile material, helping to reduce the chance of surface gouging while doing projects like snow removal or working with a blade. While operating the loader on a hard surface, keep the bucket level and put the lift control in the float position to permit the bucket to float on the working surface. Keep in mind that if hydraulic down pressure is exerted on the bucket, the bucket will wear faster than normal.  Consult your operator’s manual for proper operation of the loader.

Utilize a 3rd Function Valve

Add even more capabilities to your tractor with a 3rd Function Valve. Often called a third function, as it’s used to control an additional third hydraulic circuit, a 3rd function valve is a hydraulic control valve that’s installed on your machine, adding an additional hydraulic function. Land Pride 3rd Function Valves are designed in conjunction with Kubota engineering to fit both ROPS and cab models, making them a seamless add-on to any machine. What’s more, they’re simple to use with the push of a button.

Outstanding quality, maximum performance and dominant durability comes naturally to Kubota equipment.
