A successful hay season starts with well-maintained equipment. Before you hit the fields, take time to inspect, clean, and service your tractors and hay tools to help prevent costly downtime.

Tractors - Your tractor is the backbone of your hay operation, so ensure it's in top condition:

• Fluids & Filters: Check engine oil, hydraulic fluid, coolant, water separator, fuel and air filters. Replace or fill as needed. Inspect fuel system, air intake and hydraulics for leaks. Clean out the radiator and coolers.

• Battery & Electrical System: Inspect battery cables, clean battery terminals, check electrolyte level, and ensure lights and controls function properly.

• Tires: Inspect for wear, check air pressure, and inflate as necessary according to your owner's manual.

•  Belts & Hoses: Look for cracks, leaks, and signs of wear.

Hay Tools - Your hay tools work hard, so give them the attention they deserve:

• General Inspection: look for signs of wear, rust or loose bolts, and remove any leftover debris from moving parts. Grease all grease points as needed, clean hydraulic connections and check hydraulic hoses and connections for leaks. Check and replace any worn or missing guarding.

•  Mowers & Conditioners: Check belts for wear and inspect disc blades. Replace as needed. Check cutterbar and gearbox oil levels. Replace or fill as needed.

• Tedders & Rakes: Check for broken or bent tines and repair or replace where necessary.

• Balers: Thoroughly inspect belts, chains and tensioners, pickup teeth, pickup cams and rollers, along with the bearings.
