For Brittany and Bodhi Anderson, founders of Sugar Hill Farmstead, eating locally sourced food has been a central part of life for over a decade. Now, through their CSA, they’re able to share this mission with 100 other families every month.
The Andersons’ journey began in 2011, when Bodhi and Brittany moved to Hilo, Hawaii - the Big Island. While working as one of only two medical providers at southernmost healthcare facility in
the United States, Bodhi saw first-hand how deeply connected diet and chronic disease are. In an effort to prioritize their health and reconnect with their food, the Andersons committed to eating 100% local.
Building strong relationships with island farmers and purchasing meat and produce directly from them gave Brittany and Bodhi the farming bug. Brittany says the two decided to “just go for it”, first raising bees, chicken, rabbits, ducks, pigs, and sheep on a portion of their friends’ land. When the Andersons decided they were ready for cattle, they bought ten acres of property, one mile from where Bodhi’s great-grandfather farmed.
Early on, the Andersons invested in a Kubota Tractor and attachments. Then, in 2020, in recognition of Bodhi’s service, the Andersons received a Sidekick through Kubota’s Geared to Give program. Brittany says their Kubota equipment has been fantastic and an integral part in banana harvesting and property maintenance.
Previously an industrial sweet-potato farm, when the Andersons bought their property, the land’s ecosystem was struggling. Thanks to their commitment to sustainable and regenerative farming methods, within a year, the land had recovered. Today, seven years later, the land is now home to a slew of apex predators, dragonflies, butterflies, haws, worms, and owls.
After winning a business plan contest in 2019, the Andersons started a meat CSA with their rotationally grazed cattle, pigs, and chicken, serving around 20 people per month. Today, the CSA has expanded and ships to families across all the Hawaiian islands. Check out more of their story @ sugarhillfarmstead on socials or sugarhillfarmstead.com
